Impact to the Filipino Employee

The manufacturing of cigarettes have been widely useful to our country, be it in the economy or in the rates of employment. This is due to the growing demands of cigarettes to the public which makes most of the company’s manufacturing cigarettes lead to expansion of their plantations and factories. The companies that are responsible for the manufacturing of cigarettes do not only pay the highest of the taxes but they also provide a high rate of employment to the Filipinos. More than 5,000 Filipino employees in all over Luzon work in different Tobacco Companies.

Most of the Filipino workers in these areas are only capable of farming and doing factory work, as this explains their inability of being qualified to other higher jobs that will give them more salary. Which means many Filipino labourers will find it hard to find another job and if ever they do so it only be in the same level. The attempt of the government to have a smoke-free country might lead to high unemployment rate. Since there is a certain prohibition mentioned in the proposed plan about consuming cigarettes in public, this will undeniably decrease its demand. This may lead to the possibility of those companies responsible for the manufacturing of cigarettes to decrease their workers. And if uncontrolled, it will also increase poverty. Since the most of the Filipino workers depend their entire lives into a minimum waged job, which is just enough to provide for their basic psychological needs.
